Use Update to move compatible theme customizations into a fresh theme package in the same Shopify store.

How to use it

  1. Open ThemeGuard and select Update.
  2. Choose the source theme. The published theme is selected by default.
  3. Upload a fresh Shopify theme ZIP and select Update.
  4. Read the result and review any skipped customizations.
  5. Preview the new, unpublished theme in Shopify before publishing it yourself.

What carries over

Compatible saved settings, JSON templates, section groups, app embed settings, and dynamic metafield connections can carry over. Products, files, and metafield values already belong to the store and do not need to move between themes.

The fresh theme package supplies the theme code, assets, and settings schemas. Removed sections, blocks, settings, and unsupported values are skipped and reported. Renamed settings and substantial schema changes may need manual adjustments in the theme editor.

Good to know

The source theme is not overwritten. ThemeGuard creates a new, unpublished theme. Theme-write approval is required and is currently pending for ThemeGuard. ZIP files may be up to 100 MiB compressed, 200 MiB expanded, and 20 MiB per file. If creation is unconfirmed, check Shopify’s Themes page before retrying to avoid duplicates.
